Originating from Jun County, Henan, this leather tiger design dates back over 1,400 years.
In Chinese tradition, the tiger is more than a fierce animal — it's a symbol of protection, strength, and vitality, often regarded as an auspicious guardian against illness and evil.
Jun County leather tigers retain their bold, almost fierce facial expressions, painted in vivid folk colors.
They embody the idea of carrying a guardian tiger by your side, wishing you peace and good health.
Gently press or shake the tiger’s head and tail, and you'll hear a unique whistling sound that resonates from the hollow inside the head and flows through the tail.
Small versions: clear and crisp sound
Large versions: deep and resonant tone
In May 2024, our team traveled to the clay-sculpting village in Jun County and rediscovered this nearly lost tradition.
At the time, only one artisan — 77-year-old Granny Wang — still knew how to make them by hand.
Each tiger is handcrafted over 7 days by Granny Wang and her fellow artisans through a delicate 7-step process:
Each leather tiger takes a week to make by hand, using Yellow River clay for the head, sheepskin for the body, and wool for the fur. The process includes molding, drying, painting, trimming, and assembly — resulting in a soft, natural, and beautifully crafted folk toy.
Name: Traditional Folk Toy – Leather Tiger
Types Available:
Short Fur (multiple colors)
Long Fur (multiple colors)
Material: Yellow River clay, genuine sheepskin & wool
Size: Tiger face approx. 5cm × 5cm (handmade, slight variation possible)
Each leather tiger is made from natural sheepskin, so fur length may vary slightly depending on where the wool is cut — that’s part of its charm!
You’re welcome to DIY trim the fur to suit your preference.
Some shedding is natural due to the cutting process.
Simply use a wide-tooth comb or fingers to gently fluff and tidy the fur.
For small stains, use alcohol-free wet wipes to gently dab the wool.
For stubborn marks, use a mild neutral detergent, then blot dry with a clean cloth.Always clean gently to avoid damaging the natural material.
Each tiger is lovingly handmade by Master Wang Jumei and may show minor traces of craftsmanship.
If you’re seeking perfection, please consider this before purchasing.
