Known as fengguan in Chinese, phoenix crowns were originally crafted for imperial empresses and later adopted by aristocratic brides, who were considered “empresses for a day” on their wedding.

A defining feature is the use of brilliant blue kingfisher feathers, whose vibrant color is not pigment-based but an optical illusion caused by microstructure.

Because of their delicacy, antique fengguan are exceedingly rare today.

These four phoenix crowns all date back to the Ming Dynasty, and belonged to imperial empresses Xiao Jing and Xiao Duan.

The Twelve-Dragon Nine-Phoenix Crown:

A ceremonial headdress of Empress Xiaojing, is part of the collection at the Ming Dynasty Tombs Museum.

The Nine-Dragon Nine-Phoenix Crown:

A ceremonial headdress of Empress Xiaoduan, is part of the collection at the National Museum of China.

The Six-Dragon Three-Phoenix Crown:

A daily headdress of Empress Xiaoduan, is part of the collection at the National Museum of China.

The Three-Dragon Two-Phoenix Crown:

A daily headdress of Empress Xiaojing, is part of the collection at the Palace Museum of China.
